How To Trick Your Boyfriend Into Being Stylish

Sometimes, our significant others need a little help steering themselves in the right direction (fashionably speaking). And just because YOU’RE not the one sitting behind the (hypothetical) wheel, doesn’t mean that there aren’t a few tricks you can pull from the passenger seat. Let’s be honest – if you want to fulfill that lifelong ~dream~ of walking down the street looking like the Beckhams, there are a few tweaks that need to be made. Although it’s difficult to force your boyfriend to take an interest into the latest fashion trends, there are a few steps you can take to trick him into being stylish.

1. Get Ready Together

Whether you’re going on a date, night out, or hang-out with friends, getting ready together allows you to offer…a little help…in the wardrobe department. If you are feeling more constructive than bossy, let him pick out what he wants to wear and then give him some (honest/ruthless/aggressive) feedback. A few “How about this instead!” or “uhhhhhhhh I don’t know how I feel about those shoes,” can engrave some solid fashion lessons into his mind. Hopefully, he will think twice the next time he pulls out his faded hoodie and baggy medium wash denim for a night out.
PS: If you ditch the jacket circa Drive, Ryan Gosling, I will be your girlfriend. But only if you ditch the jacket.

2. The Gift of Giving

The best way to get your boyfriend to wear the new pastel chinos that have been rocking summer 2013 runways is to BUY him the new pastel chinos that have been rocking summer 2013 runways. Buying him a style staple will pave the road to better fashion choices made in the future; it’s sort of like buying him his first training bra. Word from the wise: Don’t buy something that is too out of his comfort zone – otherwise you’re purchase will go to waste.
(So maybe you should rethink those pastel hues…loljk).

3. Shopping Partners

Shopping with your boyfriend can help ensure that he never picks up a poorly fitted blazer ever again. If he is the type that absolutely hates shopping, he might actually really enjoy the idea of having a shopping partner to make the entire process a little easier. Take him to different stores and get him to try on some stuff he’s never tried before! This is your chance to become his personal style guide, all the while getting some GQ-ready into his closet – so he mathematically has a smaller chance of picking out a horrific outfit on his own. Now if your time to channel your inner Stacy London & Clinton Kelly!

4. Closet Clean-out

Before I begin, I want to make something absolutely clear: A closet clean-out is something you do together. You going into his closet behind his back and throwing away his clothing without his consent is a NO-NO. Make a closet clean-out something fun that you can do together. Grab a bottle of wine, go through each piece individually, and donate the old clothes to charity!

5. Compliments

Complimenting style choices made by other men is the most indirect-direct way of telling your boyfriend “LOOK HOW GOOD THAT LOOKS, PLEASE WEAR THAT THE NEXT TIME WE GO OUT.” By telling your boyfriend “Look at that guy’s sneakers!” or “Wow that man’s suit is so well fitted, I love it” or “Did you see Justin Timberlake’s hair at the Grammy’s”, hopefully he will be smart enough to pick up the hints and try those trends out himself. You should also make a point to compliment your boyfriend if makes a really solid fashion choice himself, so he not only know that he made a good decision, but that you appreciate the effort!
