Sinitta admits she felt "betrayed" by Simon Cowell over his baby with new lover
In the first time she has spoken publicly since news of the
baby broke, she told how Lauren Silverman's pregnancy came like a bolt
from the blue
Close: Simon Cowell and Sinitta may no longer be at item but they're still firm friends
the one thing Simon Cowell was adamant about during his on-off
relationship with Sinitta was the fact he did not want children,
according to the singer.
So it came like a bolt from the blue when
the X Factor boss told her his lover Lauren Silverman was pregnant with
his child – and he was looking forward to being a dad.
And the
49-year-old pop star said the shattering blow left her feeling
“betrayed” by the music mogul – who she has been close to for more than
20 years.
Friends of Sinitta fear she will now be frozen out of
Cowell’s inner circle of pals by Lauren and that he will no longer have
time for her while he is bringing up a child.
Speaking of the
moment her 53-year-old ex told her he was going to be a dad, the
American said: “I was completely and utterly stunned.
"I was in such a daze, to the point where I wondered if I was dreaming it.
“He sounded… odd, calm, strange, which threw me. I don’t mind admitting all sorts of emotions were running around inside me.
“He was concerned about how I’d take it, which, on reflection, he didn’t need to be. He didn’t owe me that consideration.” Baby on board: Pregnant Lauren Silverman
It is the first time she has spoken publicly since news of the baby broke.
Sinitta admitted she felt very differently to when she found out Cowell was engaged to make-up artist Mezghan Hussainy in 2010.
She
added: “That was a curve ball. But I suppose there has been a certain
amount of comfort for me in my not having a child with Simon as he never
wanted to have children.
"That’s who he was, you accepted it.
“Then, to discover that he is going to have a child, only with someone
else and they’re building this life together…
"All those crazy
things were going through my head and it’s not fair and it’s not
pertinent to Simon and Lauren’s situation and I don’t have a right to
feel that way. But I’m being honest.”
Sinitta, who first dated
Cowell in the 80s but knew him from the age of 14, also told of her
shock at hearing he had fallen for Lauren, 36, who was married to real
estate boss Andrew Silverman. Parents to be: Lauren Silverman and Simon Cowell
Cowell regularly takes a group of women away on his yacht to
the South of France or Barbados, including Sinitta and Lauren and until
recently even Andrew.
But Sinitta insisted she had no idea of the affair.
She
told Hello! magazine: “We knew we were all close friends but I didn’t
realise he and Lauren were falling in love and, when I found out, I will
admit I was taken aback and did feel a sense of betrayal.”
She initially struggled to contain her true feelings about the baby.
Before
the news broke on July 29 she tweeted: “Something has happened… half
miracle, half nightmare! Wake me up I want to get off!”
Cowell has refused to reveal whether he plans to marry Lauren following her divorce from Andrew.
He
said last week: “I’m not ruling anything out in the future. If you
asked me a year ago, at my age am I going to have a baby, I probably
would have said ‘no’ so you’ve just got to take each day as it comes
now. Whatever feels right you should do.’’
Cowell met Sinitta as she began a pop career with him promoting her music and trying to make her a star.
In December 2008 she said: “He was carrying my bags and doing my schedules and driving the car. Now I’m carrying his.” Ex and current girlfriends: Lauren Silverman sits behind Sinitta
She became a regular on his yacht holidays even after they split.
Other former girlfriends who have been spotted on the Slipstream yacht in the past include Mezghan and Jackie St-Clair.
Kelly Bergantz, Cowell’s US telly producer, her husband Ben Belldegrun and her sister Jamie were also on board this summer.
Sources
close to Cowell and Sinitta say their friendship “will be tested” as
he will need to spend more time with Lauren and their baby.
Perhaps aware he had upset her, she was invited out to join him on a yacht last month shortly after his baby news went public.
A
source said: “Simon’s life is going to change very quickly in the next
few months and he has insisted he will look after Lauren and his baby.
“That means less time for him to have fun and fewer yacht holidays.
"The worry is that Sinitta and some of Simon’s other female friends will be kept at arm’s length.
“Lauren is now the main woman in his life.”
Sinitta and Simon Cowell
Sinitta has spoken in the past about how the holidays with
Cowell help them both to stay calm and take the pressure off the music
mogul.
In a 2009 interview, she said: “With Simon, I could sit on a boat for two weeks and just relax. We escape together.
“That’s probably what it is with us. I’m his escape, I would say, and he’s mine.
“I love him with all my heart. When we are together, he’s a very primary person in my life.”
On
their time as a couple, she added: “We could have drifted along for
many years because we’re very close, very companionable, very
compatible.
"We find it very easy to be together.
“I’ve
known him since I was 14. I didn’t have a brother or a father when I was
younger, so he’s the male figure I’ve had in my life the longest.
“He’s covered everything, from boyfriend and friend to father figure and boss. He’s just so many things to me.”
But it is thought one of the main reasons behing their split was that she wanted children and he didn’t.
Sinitta also spoke about her own struggle to have children, which could explain her pain over Cowell’s baby.
She suffered four miscarriages and tried IVF before adopting Magdalena, now eight, and Zac, six.
Speaking
about his new child last month, Sinitta insisted he would make a good
father because he was a big kid himself. He is godfather to her
children.
She said: “Simon does everything naughty. I’m trying to promote eating nicely, speaking nicely, not being rude.
“He shows them food in his mouth when he is eating and gives them loud toys to bang in the bedroom when I’m trying to sleep.
“He’s great with kids, he becomes a third child himself.”
It
is thought Sinitta, who also went out with David Essex and Brad Pitt,
is keen to be the baby’s godmother – as this will help her stay close to
Cowell.
A source added: “Simon is such a huge part of Sinitta’s life, she hates the idea of losing him to Lauren.” Hello Magazine cover
